Symptoms of Postpartum Depression
- Loss of interest in baby – Moms, especially new moms should feel excited to bond with their baby. It is just normal to have some “me time” once in a while. However, if the mommy doesn’t like the idea of bonding with her baby as well as lack the time to function in her daily life, then that’s one of the red flags. Lack of care for the child, lack of self-care, and the intent of harming the child are all signs of postpartum depression.
- Feeling of worthlessness – If you feel like you are worthless for not having to care for your child and yourself and this has led to a state of guilt, it is a sign that you need help. It is just okay to lean on your family for support.
- Restlessness and Insomnia – Sleep is not just important for new moms but for everyone. It is essential for both physical and mental health. If you lack sleep, there is a strong tendency for mood swings.
- Drastic change in weight – Any drastic changes in weight signify a possibility of postpartum depression. As someone who has just given birth, it is important to eat healthy foods on a regular basis. New moms should focus on eating fruits, vegetables, and protein. The point here is that new moms should have all the nutrients they need to keep their body healthy.
Postpartum depression is often mistaken for baby blues as they share similar symptoms, but postpartum depression symptoms are more intense and last longer; to the extent that they affect your ability to care for your baby and yourself. Postpartum depression symptoms if not dealt and managed properly could lead to postpartum psychosis; a condition that causes severe symptoms, which include the following:
- Sleep disturbances
- Delusions agitation
- Attempt to hurt both self and the baby
To prevent postpartum depression from leading into postpartum psychosis it is important to know how to gauge the symptoms. That way, management and treatment will be immediately started. One should never disregard the importance of managing postpartum depression so that it would not lead to a life-threatening condition like postpartum psychosis.
